Now that 2019 has drawn to a close we take a look back at the best titles released on Xbox Live Arcade. Many games used to release one by one on pkv games, which used to draw the attention of many ardent game players as well. A lot of these came out during Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade, but not all of them. Here is the breakdown in order of release.
Peggle
Part pachinko and part pinball Peggle is one of the top Xbox Live Arcade games. It mixes skill with random chance and power-ups in a well polished game. With the expansion of Peggle Nights you get double the game content for $15. In addition to a lengthy single player “adventure” there is a challenge mode as well as competitive and social multiplayer modes.
Space Invaders Extreme
In a classic 2D Space Invaders shooter style this recreation of a classic arcade game adds HD graphics, interesting powers, and co-operative play. The leaderboards and verses multiplayer modes keep the competitive players busy for hours on end.
Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers
The competitive card game comes to Xbox Live Arcade with a lot of beginner friendly modes. Additionally there are new cards and characters for veteran players. If you’re familiar with Magic, the card game, then the Arcade version is an easy transition. If you’re new to the game the mentor mode makes getting started much easier.
Battlefield 1943
This multiplayer only game is set in the Pacific during World War 2 era battles. With classic Battlefield combat for only $15 including land, see, and air fighting there are a lot of options for every fan of first person shooters. This is probably the top shooter on Xbox Live Arcade.
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
This compete remake of the classic action adventure title bring contemporary art and complete voice over to the original The Secret of Monkey Island. You can switch between the classic graphics and the modern HD graphics at any time as you play. The game is a classic for a reason and LucasArts has made the Special Edition release one of the best games of the year.
Splosion Man
With some of the simplest controls a complex platformer has ever featured Splosion Man is easy to get started playing. With 50 levels that get progressively harder it will be challenging but the humorous story line keep you engaged. There is an additional 50 co-op levels for those wanting a real challenge with some friends. Possibly the funniest Xbox Live Arcade game of 2009.
Trials HD
Never has controlling a motorcycle and completing tracks been so challenging, rewarding, and frustrating all at the same time. With a constantly running leaderboard showing where you compare to your friends you’ll keep coming back to try and keep that top spot. Plus, after you finish the 50 included tracks there is a complete level editor so you can build and share your won tracks.
Shadow Complex
In a classic Castlevania style gameplay but with great HD graphics and a compelling story line Shadow Complex is one of the top Xbox Live Arcade games of 2009. With numerous hidden passages, power-ups and speed completion attempts there is a lot to do even after you finish the story the first time.
Defense Grid: The Awakening
One of the most polished tower defense games ever release keeps you coming back to try and top the leaderboards. Each level has its own leaderboard for you and your friends and making even 1 small change to your strategy can mean enough points to take the top spot. With a story line and not just a bunch of maps thrown together as well as challenges for each map there are hundreds of hours of play available.
